Sean Giery, an incoming associate research professor in the University of Wyoming’s Department of Zoology and Physiology, has been named a President’s Distinguished Scholar in recognition of his outstanding research achievements and growing national and international impact in ecology and evolutionary biology.

Giery is an evolutionary ecologist whose research examines how evolutionary processes shape ecological communities and ecosystem resilience in a rapidly changing world. His work integrates field experiments, genomic data, mechanistic modeling, and long-term datasets to study eco-evolutionary dynamics in wild animal populations.

He has written several peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including Nature Communications and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Giery also has secured nearly $1 million in competitive research funding, including more than $500,000 from the National Science Foundation. His research has attracted significant attention within the scientific community and beyond, with frequent coverage by national and international media.

Giery also is a dedicated educator and mentor, teaching courses in animal ecology, biostatistics, and evolutionary ecology while actively engaging undergraduate and graduate students in research.

“Sean exemplifies the innovation, dedication, and interdisciplinary scholarship that define the University of Wyoming,” says President Ed Seidel. “I am pleased to have him joining UW as a President’s Distinguished Scholar.”

Giery will hold the title for three years and receive support for continued scholarly excellence.
