UW Extension Welcomes New Educator Callie Surber

The University of Wyoming Extension welcomes Callie Surber as an extension educator focused on weather and climate resilience.

Surber’s new position is designed to help agricultural producers throughout Wyoming make informed decisions about how to handle harsh environmental conditions like drought and weather variability.

In collaboration with a team of UW specialists and extension educators, Surber will help produce user-friendly materials to communicate new scientific research and create knowledge exchange around technical weather data. This will include identifying and adapting weather and climate tools that can give Wyoming producers practical insight.

Surber will also work with technical service providers (TSPs) who regularly assist Wyoming producers with issues related to extreme weather. These TSPs include staff from state and federal land management agencies, conservation districts, and the Farm Service Agency.

“I am excited to work alongside Wyoming producers, technical service providers, and other extension folks to increase the resilience of working landscapes that maintain Wyoming’s unique open spaces,” comments Surber.

Surber graduated from UW in 2025 with a master’s in environment, natural resources and society. As part of her graduate research, she interviewed ranchers in the Wind River Basin, which she believes will give her important insights and help her connect with Wyoming’s agricultural communities.

Kristi Hansen, water resource economics specialist with UW Extension and associate professor of agricultural and applied economics, will serve as Surber’s supervisor. “I am excited to bring Callie on board because she is passionate about Wyoming landscapes and agriculture,” Hansen comments. “She knows that Wyoming can be a tough place to make a living and looks forward to doing her best to help producers succeed.”

Rare Broad-Winged Hawk Released at UW After Discovery on Campus in June

At the edge of the University of Wyoming’s Prexy’s Pasture Thursday, July 30, people gathered around a rare sight in Wyoming for this time of year—a broad-winged hawk.

The uncommon bird of prey was found on campus in June with a fractured beak and a significant parasite load. A month later, the young hawk, healed and ready to resume its journey, flew from UW’s lawn to the trees between the S.H. Knight Geology Building and the Engineering Building before heading southeast.
