UW Field Day to Highlight New Agricultural Research and Precision Ag Equipment

On Wednesday, July 22, the University of Wyoming will host a field day at the James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) near Lingle in collaboration with Eastern Wyoming College (EWC).

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 2753 State Highway 157. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and a field tour will start at 9:30.

During the field tour, UW faculty, staff, and students will present about current agricultural research projects. Topics include weed control, organic cropping systems, forage crops, and early-weaning strategies for livestock.

“Although we are always open to the public, this is one of our chances to provide in-depth tours of research being conducted at the station,” says Steve Paisley, director of SAREC. “With the continued dry weather, we are trying to focus on topics that are important to local producers, such as early weaning, managed grazing, and forage and legume production.”

Lunch will be served at noon. During lunch, UW Special Collections Librarian David Kruger will discuss the history of the Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station, the research arm of UW’s College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources.

In the afternoon, a New Zealand company will provide a demonstration of solar-powered grazing collars for livestock, which can act as an alternative to fences. Local companies and organizations will also display specialized agricultural equipment and information about their products and services. 

EWC will offer tours of two trailers designed as mobile laboratories. These trailers demonstrate precision agriculture technology to students throughout the state.

The tour of the precision cropping systems trailer includes precision irrigation modules, welding booths and an auto-steer tractor that is parked in the trailer. EWC’s second trailer is focused on precision livestock management, with an enclosed working cattle chute and a laboratory for livestock ultrasound, artificial insemination, and bull fertility testing.

Throughout the day, attendees are encouraged to visit posters highlighting student and faculty research conducted throughout the state.
